Koa Health's ethical triumph in latest ethics audit

Koa Health's ethical commitment shines in its 2022 - 2023 audit, with results showing an improvement in bias in measurement and data visualisation

Digital healthcare provider Koa Health has shared the results of its 2022 - 2023 ethics audit, led by IT service Eticas.

Regular audits help companies to ensure ethical treatment of user data

Koa Health was founded in 2012 and is based in Barcelona, Spain. The company is on a mission to use the latest technology to provide simple mental health support, with the ultimate goal to improve people’s mental wellbeing. Recently, it has turned its attention to behaving to the highest ethical standards, in regards to data usage and managing bias.

Neighbouring Eticas is also located in Barcelona. The team there works to spot black box algorithmic vulnerabilities and retrains AI-powered technology with better source data and content.

"Eticas is committed to helping digital mental health providers like Koa Health ensure that

the technology behind their solutions is not only effective but also ethical,” said Dr. Gemma Galdon, CEO and Founder at Eticas, “Regular audits and oversight help companies to ensure algorithms effectively limit common biases and the secure and ethical treatment of user data. As these systems increasingly influence and form a part of our lives, this is more necessary than ever before."

The results of this recent ethics audit have shown a 24% improvement, following the 2021 - 2022 audit.

This improved the score for Koa Health's mental wellbeing app, Koa Foundations, which achieved perfect ratings in several categories, such as reduction of bias in measurement and data visualisation.

Pioneering mental wellbeing with ethical commitment

"At Koa Health we push the cutting edge of mental health and digital therapeutics to pursue our vision: Mental Health For All,” said David Whewell, Chief Technology and Data Officer, and Head of Ethics at Koa Health. “It has been a core part of our mission since Day 1 to do so in a safe, controlled and ethical way. Corporate Compliance & Ethics Week allows us all to reflect on the importance of compliance and ethics, and remember that our work in healthcare requires the utmost care and diligence to ensure it is done safely and to maximum benefit. While we are all excited about the prospect of technology and AI giving us longer, better and happier lives, this week shines a spotlight on the importance of supporting a culture of doing so safely, at all levels of the organisation. It is a source of pride for me and everyone at Koa that we put ethics at the heart of everything we do, and continue to champion it across our industry and technology as a whole."
