In the US, it is clear to see that the merger of healthcare and healthcare insurance companies will continue to gain momentum in 2018, following on from the acquisition of Aetna by CVS Health in December last year.

It has been announced that UnitedHealth Group is set to acquire Chilean healthcare company Banmedica SA for $2.8bn in order to expand its current service offering and move into further global markets. The company is one of the largest healthcare companies across Latin America and also operates Brazil’s leading healthcare company, Amil.

The deal is expected to close in the first quarter of 2018, furthering UnitedHealth’s ambitions to grow internationally.

The deal follows on from United Health’s acquisition of the DaVita Medical Group for $4.9bn, showcasing UnitedHealth’s aggressive growth strategy to not only offer exceptional healthcare insurance, but quality medical care to its patients, transforming the traditional roles both healthcare providers and insurance companies have previously offered.

“Combining with UnitedHealth Group will enable Empresas Banmédica to leverage UnitedHealth Group’s clinical expertise, advanced technology, and data and health information capabilities to better meet the health needs of people in Chile, Colombia and Peru,” both companies said in a statement.

“UnitedHealth Group will benefit from Empresas Banmédica’s substantial expertise in care delivery and health benefits across its three markets.”
