Hospital Corporation America (HCA) Healthcare has announced its plans to acquire Mission Health, a non-profit North Carolina health system for $1.5bn.

With up to 28mn patient encounters per annum and 8.6mn emergency room visits, HCA Healthcare is one of the US’ leading providers of healthcare services, with 38,000 physicians and nurses striving to deliver exceptional patient care.

Through the agreement, the organisation is set to acquire substantially all the assets of Mission Health, where the proceeds will be contributed to the non-profit Dogwood Health Trust, whose purpose is to use those funds to improve the health and well-being of the people and communities of western North Carolina.

Under the agreement, HCA will acquire 763-bed Mission Hospital in Asheville; 80-bed CarePartners Rehabilitation Hospital in Asheville; 49-bed Mission Hospital McDowell in Marion; 25-bed Angel Medical Center in Franklin; 25-bed Transylvania Regional Hospital in Brevard; 25-bed Blue Ridge Regional Hospital in Spruce Pine; and 24-bed Highlands-Cashiers Hospital in Highlands.

Operating 178 locally managed hospitals and approximately 1,800 sites of care, including surgery centres, freestanding ERs, urgent care centres and physician clinics in 20 states and the United Kingdom, HCA Healthcare combines resources to strengthen hospitals, deliver patient-focused care and improve the practice of medicine.

The organisation is also set to celebrate its 50th anniversary this year.

"HCA is committed to 'learning healthcare.' That means that we commit to using the data from all the patients we’ve been privileged to care for to continuously improve care for every subsequent patient,” noted Dr Jonathan B. Perlin, President, Clinical Services Group and Chief Medical Officer.

“Because of our scale, HCA is advancing knowledge for preventing infection and sepsis, and saving lives.”
