Mercy Philadelphia Hospital is set to undergo significant expansion works of its emergency department in a $15mn project.

Set to double in size, the works will enable the hospital to provide exceptional patient care, and will be completed in 2019.

“Mercy Philadelphia Hospital is deeply rooted in this community and we believe everyone should have access to safe, high-quality healthcare,” explained Susan Cusack, the hospital's executive director.

“This expansion will enable us to serve our emergency patients in a new, comfortable setting with the latest amenities.”

Part of Trinity Health, who will provide the majority of the required funding, the Pennsylvania Redevelopment Assistance Capital Program has also financially supported the project.

Mercy has served the local West Philadelphia community for over a century. The recent development will therefore enable it to further its efforts to serve growing populations and invest in new digital tools to support its end-goal.

“Not only is it bigger, but we’re expanding and modernizing triage to reduce wait times. We’re moving the CT scan into the emergency department to reduce wait times,” explained Chair of Emergence Medicine Dr Tony Mazzeo.

“We’re changing our ambulance entrance so that our sickest patients come right into the high acuity area.”

Increasing the number of patient beds to 30 in the emergency department, the project will create a number of new roles. CBRE | Heery will be behind the expansion works, which will encompass an updated entrance, waiting area, reception area, security facilities and an enlarged triage area with a separate ambulance entrance, Philly Voice has reported.
