In the heart of Northeast Oklahoma, a comprehensive cancer centre has been quietly revolutionising patient care. Oklahoma Cancer Specialists and Research Institute (OCSRI), a physician-owned oncology network of board-certified medical, gynaecological and radiation oncologists, has emerged as a beacon of hope for cancer patients in the region.
At the core of OCSRI’s technological transformation lies the implementation of GE HealthCare's Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS), which has dramatically improved the efficiency and quality of care provided by the institute’s team of healthcare professionals.
Formed in 2016 as a partnership between St. John Health System and Tulsa Cancer Institute, the institute has grown into a formidable force in cancer treatment and research. Today, OCSRI is a community-based oncology practice with 400 staff members, including a combined 40 physicians and allied health professionals, and focuses on providing high-quality, value-based care for Oklahomans.
Jennifer Freeman: From X-ray Tech to radiology services manager
Jennifer Freeman's career in radiology spans nearly three decades, showcasing a remarkable journey of professional growth. “I graduated in radiography in 1996 and started as an X-ray tech, quickly transitioning to CT,” she recalls. After a decade of hospital work, Freeman joined OCSRI as a CT tech, marking the beginning of her 20-year tenure with the institute.
Over two decades, Jennifer’s role has evolved significantly. When OCSRI implemented its first PACS system, she became the user-side administrator, leveraging her hands-on experience to bridge the gap between technical capabilities and practical application. Today, as the manager of radiology services, she oversees seven modalities and serves as co-PACS administrator.
Her extensive experience as a radiologic technologist provides Freeman with a unique understanding of both the technical and clinical aspects of imaging systems. This perspective has been crucial in tailoring the PACS implementation to meet the specific needs of OCSRI's busy cancer care environment.
