Arcutis Biotherapeutics is driving profound industry change, thanks to its distinctive culture and strategic approach to technology projects

Arcutis is an emerging biopharmaceutical leader founded in 2016 to address significant unmet needs in medical dermatology.

Its leaders - including Rajvir Madan, Arcutis’s Chief Digital and Technology Officer - have collectively developed over 50 FDA-approved products.

The company’s development has been underpinned by its distinctive culture and technological strategy, two things which Rajvir champions.

A collaborative culture

A proponent of Peter Drucker’s belief that ‘culture eats strategy for breakfast’- and lunch and dinner- Rajvir was previously at  L’Oréal, later driven to enter the pharma industry after his mother’s cancer diagnosis.

“It was inspired by this personal mission that I could do more in terms of committing my energy and skills to help advance the cause of patients and the healthcare industry,” he explains.

This mission underpins Arcutis’s patient and stakeholder-centric approach to its culture, which is defined by core operating principles instead of subjective corporate values.

“Our first and perhaps most important operating principle is that the patient is paramount,” Rajvir explains.

“Another is about accountability and empowerment. We really want to push decision-making down to the lowest level of the organisation and ultimately hold our team members accountable for the delivery of those results.”

Arcutis values every employee's distinctive expertise, ensuring decisions are informed by specialist understanding. As Rajvir says: “I do not want to be the smartest person or the most intelligent person in the IT department,”

With every employee at Arcutis a shareholder, integral to this is fostering a growth mindset where experimentation and failure are part of the journey. In an industry where 9 out of 10 drugs never reach commercialisation, it undoubtedly is.

“We encourage that notion of innovation and that notion of risk-taking because that's part and parcel of the business that we're running,” Rajvir says.

Another operational principle is being highly data-driven, which is prominent in Arcutis’s approach to technology projects.

Keeping pace with technological change

Rajvir says the biggest challenge in his role is staying abreast of technological change, and ensuring that every decision: “ Is ultimately going to solve a real problem that one of our stakeholders is experiencing.”

Staying abreast of change is a journey, rarely one that companies walk alone, which is why Yash Technologies has been such a vital partner for Arcutis.

“We’ve hired them to run a fairly significant chunk of our cybersecurity operations,” Rajvir explains.

“They’re also willing to come to the table and say look, you guys are doing great in all these areas, but here’s where we think you could evolve your capabilities.”

From technology projects to culture, collaboration informs everything Arcutis does as it continues to solve and address patient challenges in medical dermatology.
