Huawei's Return to the Running Market with Wearable Tech

Huawei has returned to the professional running market with a global product launch held on 20 March 2025 in Madrid, Spain.
The Now is Your Run event could signal a strategic shift for the technology company as it re-enters a segment it last addressed in 2020.
The Madrid showcase featured multiple product announcements across wearables, mobile devices and audio technology.
Central to the launch was the HUAWEI WATCH GT Runner 2, which the company positions as its first dedicated professional running watch since 2020.
Huawei also announced that two-time Olympic champion Eliud Kipchoge will serve as global ambassador for the WATCH GT Runner range.
"Running means much more than running fast," Eliud says. "I believe that running is the most beautiful activity on every level. Together with Huawei, we can reach millions of runners around the world and hopefully impact their lives in a beautiful and positive way."
The partnership with Kipchoge represents a significant endorsement for Huawei's return to the professional running segment, lending credibility to the brand's ambitions in sports technology.
Advanced Technology and Professional Features
The HUAWEI WATCH GT Runner 2 represents what the company describes as five years of research and development.
According to Huawei, the device incorporates a 3D floating antenna architecture intended to improve signal precision and minimise interference during activity tracking.
The watch features an intelligent positioning algorithm designed to maintain route and distance calculations during temporary GPS signal loss.
For marathon training and competition, the device offers Intelligent Marathon Mode, which Huawei frames as delivering training guidance and race-day support through a single interface.
While developed with professional athletes in focus, the technology could benefit runners across ability levels through AI-supported training recommendations.
Eliud notes: "I am passionate to share my opinions and perspectives to improve the smartwatch experience not just for elite athletes but for runners all around the world."
The integration of professional-grade features with accessible AI technology positions the GT Runner 2 as a device that bridges the gap between elite performance tracking and everyday fitness monitoring, potentially appealing to a broad spectrum of users.
Expanded Product Ecosystem
Beyond the GT Runner 2, Huawei unveiled updates to its broader wearable portfolio.
The HUAWEI WATCH Ultimate 2 now includes a Green edition variant, maintaining the device's diving certification and outdoor durability credentials while adding golf-specific features for range practice and course play.
At a different price point, the HUAWEI Band 11 Series combines compact form with an enlarged, higher-resolution display for improved visibility in bright environments.
The band provides continuous health monitoring, activity tracking and smart notifications, positioning it as an everyday wellness device.
Huawei used the Madrid event to introduce the HUAWEI Mate 80 Pro, its latest flagship mobile device.
The handset features a True-to-Colour Camera system and what Huawei terms a Dual Space Ring Design, which combines contemporary and traditional aesthetic elements.
The Mate 80 Pro incorporates 2nd-generation Kunlun Glass and AI processing technology, which according to Huawei could enhance imaging accuracy, device durability and user experience responsiveness.
The product range extended to portable computing with the HUAWEI MatePad Mini, the company's first mini tablet format.
The device offers an 8.8-inch display in a compact profile, targeting professionals requiring lightweight hardware for document work, reading or media consumption whilst travelling.
In audio technology, Huawei launched the HUAWEI FreeBuds Pro 5, which the company claims features the industry's first dual-engine AI noise cancellation.
Combined with a dual-drive acoustic system, the earbuds could deliver improved frequency response and vocal clarity, reflecting Huawei's focus on adaptive listening technology.
The broader strategic narrative around the launch centres on Huawei's "Now is Yours" brand positioning, with the Now is Your Run theme extending this philosophy into health and sports technology.
Through its partnership with Eliud and the integration of AI capabilities across its product ecosystem, Huawei appears to be pursuing a convergence of performance technology and wellbeing-focused innovation.
According to the company, it aims to continue "using warm products and sincere communication to enable more people to enjoy a healthier and more vibrant life through technology".
