Dr Benjamin Al, Director of Dermatology at Beiersdorf, says the release of Probiom8 signals the beginning of a fresh approach to acne-prone skin care

Beiersdorf is pursuing a novel approach to treating acne-prone skin with the launch of its Dermopure Clinical Probiom8 range.

Sold under Beiersdorf’s Eucerin brand, it is an eight-week skincare kit for acne-prone skin, designed to address mild to persistent blemishes.

The company says TopiC.A, a probiotic technology, is central to its effectiveness, which targets acne-associated bacteria by supporting, rather than disrupting, the balance of the skin microbiome.

Beiersdorf is a Hamburg-based company with over 140 years of history. It employs more than 22,000 people worldwide and generated €9.9bn (US$11.5bn) in sales in 2025. Its portfolio includes NIVEA, Eucerin, La Prairie and Hansaplast, alongside the technical adhesives business, tesa.

Discussing the launch, Dr Benjamin Al, Director of Dermatology at Beiersdorf, says: “What makes this launch significant for us is that it translates decades of research into a completely new consumer-facing application.

“It broadens the options available within the Dermopure Clinical range and reflects our growing understanding that the composition of the skin microbiome plays an important role in the appearance of acne-prone skin.”

A growing market

The global acne-prone skin products market grew 8.8% between 2020 and 2025, reaching €4.6bn (US$5.4bn) in retail sales in 2025. Around one in five people worldwide are affected by acne, rising to 28.3% among 16–24-year-olds and 19.3% among adults aged 25–39.

In line with this consumer demand, Beiersdorf already possesses a strong portfolio in acne skin care treatments.

“Dermopure Clinical Probiom8 complements rather than replaces our existing portfolio,” explains Anne-Christin Worthmann, Senior Manager of Medical Management at Eucerin.

“With this launch, we are adding a new dermocosmetic approach for acne-prone skin that builds on more than 20 years of microbiome research. While many established skin care approaches primarily focus on visible signs rather than one of the root causes of blemish-prone skin, Probiom8 is designed to support a balanced skin microbiome using carefully selected skin-native probiotic strains,” she continues.

Strong trial figures

The efficacy of the Probiom8 product range is backed by strong scientific data.

Anne-Christin explains: “In our studies we have seen time and time again how our product has made a real difference in the lives of our consumers.”

Probiom8 trial results: at a glance
  • 7 clinical studies conducted during the development programme.
  • 3,000+ participants tested worldwide across a range of climate zones.
  • 226+ dermatologists evaluated the skincare approach.
  • 88% of dermatologists said they would give Probiom8 to their own children aged 12+.
  • 46% of participants achieved clear or almost clear-looking skin after eight weeks.
  • 114 participants aged 12–34 took part in a comparative clinical study, which found improvements in blemishes, lesion counts and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.

The development programme during the formulation of Probiom8 involved seven clinical studies, including a real-world evidence study, while the skin care approach was evaluated by more than 226 dermatologists, of which 88% said they would give Probiom8 to their own children who are aged 12 years and older.

Overall, the product was tested with more than 3,000 participants worldwide, covering all climate zones, and was proven effective on all phototypes and different severity levels of blemishes. After eight weeks, 46% of participants achieved clear or almost clear-looking skin according to dermatologist assessments.

Microbiome science in dermatology

Probiom8 could offer a new approach to managing acne-prone skin.

“We see Probiom8 as the beginning, not the destination,” says Benjamin.

“Every new insight into the skin microbiome helps us better understand how to support different skin needs through dermocosmetic skin care…Looking ahead, we are exploring how microbiome science could contribute to innovations for other areas such as sensitive skin and skin aging.

"That's why we view the microbiome as one of the most exciting areas of skin research today.”
