FedEx amplifies its impact on healthcare with enhanced logistics and life science centres in the Asia-Pacific

FedEx plays a vital part in advancing healthcare by developing sophisticated shipping solutions. The company’s latest upgrade, the expanded Korea Life Science Center in Gimpo, South Korea, signals its deepening commitment to streamline healthcare logistics in the region.

Crucial expansions in life sciences logistics

The newly expanded FedEx Korea Life Science Center significantly boosts its size to 2,288 square metres, nearly tripling its previous capacity. This facility hosts five distinct temperature-controlled zones, catering to a wide range of temperatures from -150°C to 25°C. Constant monitoring ensures the facility adheres strictly to pharmaceutical cold chain regulations. Also noteworthy is its certification under Korea Good Supply Practice, aligning with stringent quality and regulatory standards essential in healthcare.

Enhanced to handle both domestic and international shipping requirements, the Korea Life Science Center enhances FedEx's ability to manage temperature-sensitive shipments such as investigational medicinal products, biological samples and biopharmaceuticals. By elevating its logistical capabilities, FedEx not only supports seamless and dependable transportation but also empowers pharmaceutical companies and clinical trial operations to focus on patient care without logistical concerns.

"Asia-Pacific's healthcare sector is evolving at an unprecedented pace, driven by demographic shifts, infrastructure investments and rapid tech advancements,” explains Kawal Preet, President, Asia Pacific at FedEx.

“At FedEx, we are leveraging our decades of healthcare expertise, extensive global network and differentiated solutions to propel this growth. Through strategic investments in cutting-edge facilities and AI-driven smart logistics, we are reshaping healthcare supply chains and enabling the future of life sciences research and business innovation across the region.”

FedEx's deepening commitment to healthcare logistics

Amid a flourishing pharmaceutical market projected to reach US$290bn by 2028 in the Asia-Pacific (APAC) region and with this region housing about half of the world’s clinical trials, the demand for precise, temperature-controlled shipping solutions is skyrocketing. FedEx is well placed to meet these demands, bringing its decades-long expertise to the fore.

The network of FedEx Life Science Centers is expansive, with key locations in Korea, Singapore, Tokyo, Mumbai, Memphis and Veldhoven in the Netherlands. Each of these centres is strategically positioned to maintain consistent temperature control, crucial for the integrity of sensitive shipments. More than 130 cold-chain facilities around the globe complement these centres, ensuring an unbroken cold chain across both domestic and international routes.

Additionally, FedEx Clinical Care ensures rapid, secure and efficient transport of time-sensitive, temperature-dependent healthcare shipments. This service promises delivery within 24-48 hours, employing features such as temperature-controlled packaging, priority handling and clearance, and round-the-clock monitoring through sensor-based, real-time tracking systems.

FedEx recognised for clinical logistics innovation

The effectiveness and innovativeness of FedEx in healthcare logistics are evident. The company recently earned the ‘Innovation in Clinical Supply Chain Logistics’ award at the Korea Biopharma Excellence Awards 2024, a testament to its significant contributions to clinical supply chains in Korea.

This accolade highlights FedEx's instrumental role in not just transporting healthcare goods, but in crafting solutions that enhance the efficiency and reliability of global healthcare supply chains. Through its ongoing innovations and strategic expansions, FedEx continues to strengthen its position as a vital link in the healthcare sector, ensuring critical healthcare deliveries are both timely and secure, ultimately fostering better patient outcomes.

Undoubtedly, FedEx's strategic initiatives and robust infrastructure developments are not just transforming logistics operations, but they are also crucially enhancing patient care across the globe.
