Deloitte: generative AI can improve access to healthcare

In a survey led by Deloitte’s Asif Dhar, Bill Fera & Leslie Korenda, results show that consumers think generative AI will make healthcare more affordable

It’s been an uncertain week for the AI sector. As reported in AI magazine, Sam Altman is set to return to OpenAI, becoming the company’s fourth CEO in five days. He was ousted last week by the company’s board of directors and then invited back after 750 OpenAI employees threatened to leave the company unless the board reinstated Altman - and then resigned themselves.

It’s the stuff of a Netflix documentary and has set X ablaze, but this has done little to calm the public’s concerns about the reliability of AI.

However, Deloitte’s 2023 Health Care Consumer Survey suggests that many see generative AI as a way to improve access to healthcare.

Deloitte: Consumers believe generative AI can make healthcare more affordable & improve access

The survey was led by Asif Dhar, US Life Sciences & Health Care leader at Deloitte Consulting, Bill Fera, Principal of Deloitte Consulting and Leslie Korenda, Research Manager at Deloitte Services, Deloitte Center for Health Solutions.

2,000 US adults were surveyed, 48% of whom said that they were already using AI, for fun and certain work tasks. Health and wellness was the third most common reason respondents said that they used AI.

Results showed:

  • 53% of consumers surveyed believe generative AI could improve access to healthcare
  • 46% said they think it can make healthcare more affordable
  • 19% of respondents who are using AI for health and wellness, said they use it to learn about specific health conditions
  • 16% said they use AI to research treatment options
  • 15% said that they use AI to understand medical or health insurance terms.

“Some of consumers’ optimism, I believe, comes from their desire for more personalised healthcare experiences,” said Fera. “They see generative AI as increasing personalised access to the healthcare system with automated personalised follow-ups, motivational nudging tailored to them and appropriate triaging for immediate needs to the appropriate level of care whether it’s an instant virtual visit versus an in-person office visit or a need for urgent care.”
