Microsoft & Epic expand AI collaboration across healthcare

The global healthcare sector is facing a nursing shortage. Microsoft & Epic have teamed up to use AI to help healthcare staff work more efficiently

According to the World Health Organisation, there will be a global shortfall of 10m healthcare workers by 2030. While the sector aims to recruit more healthcare professionals, modern technology can help staff do their jobs more efficiently, giving them time to care for patients and reduce the impact of burnout. Epic and Microsoft have teamed up to use generative AI to assist healthcare professionals.

AI technology can help healthcare professionals

Take Microsoft’s large-scale cloud and AI technologies and mix them with Epic’s understanding of the healthcare sector and clinical workflows, healthcare professionals will be able to work much more efficiently across the healthcare industry.

“Today, we are announcing the expansion of our strategic initiative to bring AI to healthcare at scale, integrating conversational, ambient and generative AI technologies across the Epic electronic health record (EHR) ecosystem,” said a representative.

At its annual Users Group Meeting, the teams will showcase:

  • AI-assisted Epic In Basket, which enables faster documentation through suggested text and rapid review with in-context summaries
  • Nuance’s Dragon Ambient eXperience (DAX) technology supports physicians by enhancing a seamless workflow experience
  • To streamline coding and billing, Epic’s AI provides medical coders with suggestions based on clinical documentation in the EHR
  • With Azure OpenAI Service, Epic can provide generative AI exploration to fill gaps in clinical evidence using real-world data.

AI can deliver significant clinical and business outcomes in healthcare

Eric Boyd, Corporate Vice President of the AI Platform at Microsoft, believes that together, Microsoft and Epic can help providers deliver significant clinical and business outcomes.

“The urgent and critical challenges facing healthcare systems and their providers demand a comprehensive approach combining Azure OpenAI Service with Epic’s industry-leading technology,” he said. “Our expanded partnership builds on a long history of collaboration between Microsoft, Nuance and Epic, including our work to help healthcare organisations migrate their Epic environments to Azure.”

“Our exploration of OpenAI’s GPT-4 has shown the potential to increase the power and accessibility of self-service reporting through SlicerDicer, making it easier for healthcare organisations to identify operational improvements, including ways to reduce costs and to find answers to questions locally and in a broader context,” said Seth Hain, Senior Vice President of research and development at Epic.
