Amazon is leveraging AI to transform healthcare, enhancing patient care and streamlining processes for medical professionals across the industry

The healthcare industry, already under immense strain due to the recent global pandemic, is experiencing a significant transformation, driven in part by advancements in AI. At the forefront of this technological revolution is Amazon, a company that is rapidly expanding its AI capabilities to reshape the healthcare landscape, enhancing both patient care and the efficiency of medical professionals.

Integrating AI into its healthcare offerings, Amazon is committed to fundamentally improving the healthcare experience. According to Sunita Mishra, Chief Medical Officer & Head of AI Clinical Innovation, Amazon Health Services and Dan Sheeran, General Manager, Health Care and Life Sciences, AWS: “Amazon aims to democratise AI capabilities for the healthcare industry – and ultimately make it easier for customers and patients to get and stay healthy. We believe we can make the healthcare experience easier for patients and providers, and we know generative AI will play a critical role in that.”

Streamlining healthcare administration with AI

One of the most significant ways Amazon is contributing to the healthcare sector is through its HealthScribe service. This innovative solution is designed to reduce the administrative burden on healthcare professionals, allowing them to focus more on patient care and complex decision-making tasks. HealthScribe leverages generative AI to automatically generate clinical notes from doctor-patient conversations, a function that is particularly critical in an era where healthcare providers are inundated with paperwork.

HealthScribe’s AI-generated notes are not only comprehensive but also transparent, as every detail is cited directly from the conversation transcript. This feature ensures that clinicians maintain control over the documentation process, with the ability to review and approve notes before they are integrated into electronic health records (EHRs). This approach is aligned with Amazon’s broader strategy of fostering responsible AI development. The company is committed to ensuring that AI applications in healthcare do not compromise patient outcomes but instead enhance them through meticulous machine learning techniques.

To reinforce its impact, Amazon collaborates with some of the most reputable healthcare organisations in the world, including Advocate, Mass General, Mount Sinai, Pfizer, and Gilead to drive better healthcare outcomes.

Revolutionising pharmaceuticals and drug discovery

In addition to healthcare administration, Amazon is also making strides in the pharmaceutical sector. Amazon Pharmacy is at the forefront of this effort, utilising AI to streamline the prescription process, enhance customer service and ensure greater pricing transparency. By applying generative AI to these areas, Amazon Pharmacy is able to fill prescriptions more quickly and accurately, a crucial factor in patient care.

Amazon’s use of AI extends to the meticulous task of ensuring prescription accuracy, a challenge that has long plagued the pharmaceutical industry. AWS Textract, a computer vision service, is employed to extract printed text and handwriting from documents, minimising the risk of human error in the prescription process. Despite these advancements, Amazon remains committed to maintaining a human touch in its healthcare services. Pharmacists continue to review each prescription, ensuring that AI serves as an aid rather than a replacement for human expertise.

“There has never been a time in Amazon’s history where we’ve felt there is so much opportunity to make our customers’ lives better and easier,” wrote Amazon CEO Andy Jassy in his 2023 letter to shareholders. “We’re incredibly excited about what’s possible, focused on inventing the future, and look forward to working together to make it so.”
