The use of compressed gases is an essential element within the healthcare industry. Liquid gas storage tanks, encompassing gases such as liquid nitrogen, oxygen and carbon dioxide have remained key part in supporting patients who suffer from chronic conditions such as pulmonary fibrosis, as well as operations such as endoscopies and cryosurgeries.

Whilst health and safety remains paramount across the healthcare sector, guidance surrounding British compressed gases has recently been revised by the British Compressed Gases Association (BCGA). The BCGA employs 19,000 people and account for an annual turnover of £2.7 billion.

Ensuring that equipment is installed, maintained and operated correctly, the new guidelines highlight the growing need for appropriate storage capabilities for such gases and cryogenic liquids, and the importance of inspection and ongoing repairs to guarantee good practice.

Nonetheless, compressed and liquefied gases remain a highly valued ‘invisible industry,’ popular in the use in the food and beverage industry, within smoke machines. However, without essential training, the user is at potential risk of injuring themselves and others.
