Samsung’s New Health Software Development Kit Suite
Samsung Electronics has introduced its new Samsung Health Software Development Kit (SDK) Suite, which will support developers and researchers in building healthcare solutions.
Using Samsung’s sensor technology and comprehensive Samsung Health platform, the SDK Suite package includes sensor, data, accessory and research stack components, which are accessible to an expanded range of partners, developers and researchers.
Samsung is a global leader in digital transformation and technology services. From its base in Seoul, South Korea, the company leverages the latest technologies to provide comprehensive solutions to empower businesses to thrive in the digital era. Samsung Electronics and Samsung Health are both a part of the Samsung Group.
Sensor SDK: Advanced Sensor Technology
The Sensor SDK offers developers Samsung’s powerful BioActive Sensor algorithm on the Galaxy Watch, letting them explore new sectors of health services and build advanced new solutions.
The BioActive Sensor measures a wide range of health metrics, such as heart rate, skin temperature, electrocardiogram (ECG) and Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis (BIA).
For the first time, there will be continuous access to Photoplethysmogram (PPG) Infrared (IR) and Red LED sensor data, which will support health services related to blood oxygen level (SpO2), to strengthen sleep quality and more. The improved BIA now provides measurements for magnitude and degree, expanding on the existing eight indicators, including skeletal muscle mass and body fat mass. This will give a more precise body composition analysis, for accurate insights into physical health.
Data SDK: Health insights offer new value for health services
From October, the newly added Data SDK allows developers to utilise integrated health data gathered from diverse devices, including the Galaxy Watch, Galaxy Ring, smartphones or even third-party devices to create innovative digital health solutions.
Data SDK gives access to health metrics on the Samsung Health app — including:
- Sleep
- Exercise
- Blood pressure
- Food intake
- Blood glucose levels
Each of these is analysed by its advanced algorithm. Streamlined insights are generated by Samsung Health, to let developers enhance their productivity when developing the healthcare services.
Accessory SDK: Health insights from multiple devices, all in one place
- Blood pressure monitors
- Fitness devices like bike sensors or heart rate monitors and glucose monitors
These health insights make it more simple to view health data in one place, without activating separate third-party apps, giving users a seamless and simplified experience and expanding the ecosystem for end-to-end health management.
Empowering research institutions to support the healthcare industry with Research Stack
Research Stack is an open-source project which aims to widen the digital health research ecosystem, by creating a flexible research environment. Research Stack offers mobile and wearable app SDK, as well as web portal and backend services, which support all stages of the research process, including recruitment and surveys to advance tracking and results monitoring.
Now updated, Research Stack offers a toolset built on feedback from research institutions and their experiences implementing complex, large-scale studies.
The forthcoming 2.0 version will integrate Sensor SDK and Data SDK from the Health SDK Suite. Research Stack has already been tried by institutions as part of their research and discovery processes. The SDK suite proves Samsung’s support for the healthcare sector is not waning.
