State-of-the-art facility in Houston, Texas, will create nearly 500 specialist jobs and accelerate Bristol Myers Squibb’s delivery of next-gen medicines

Bristol Myers Squibb (BMS) is deepening its commitment to US biopharmaceutical manufacturing with a US$2.3bn "multi-modal manufacturing campus" in Houston, Texas.

The announcement marks a milestone step in its US$40bn plan to invest in US research and development, technology and domestic manufacturing over five years. 

"This investment reflects our confidence in America's continued leadership in biopharmaceutical innovation,” says Christopher Boerner, Board Chair and CEO of BMS. 

“As part of our US$40bn commitment to the United States, we're building the domestic manufacturing capabilities needed to deliver the next generation of medicines and support future scientific breakthroughs. Houston and the state of Texas offer the talent, infrastructure, and partnership needed to help bring that vision to life."

A life sciences hub

Initially, reporting had pegged the project closer to US$1bn, so the US$2.3bn figure marks a significant expansion in project scope.

Designed to accelerate the delivery of next-generation medicines to patients, the campus, in Houston's Generation Park, will create almost 500 specialist jobs, with significant room for the facility to grow and scale in the years ahead. 

Around 2,000 construction and other indirect jobs will also be created between 2027 and 2030 as the facility is built.

BMS will join Eli Lilly at Generation Park, which is building its own US$6.5bn manufacturing facility on the site to increase domestic production of small molecule synthetic medicines.

Built for future growth

The proposed 600,000-square-foot manufacturing campus in Houston is designed as a modular, multi-modal facility built for flexibility and future expansion.

Its architectural configuration enables BMS to bring new manufacturing capabilities online quickly as pipeline and commercial demands shift.

The site is also built to accommodate future advances in digital integration and automation, positioning it to stay current as biopharmaceutical manufacturing technology evolves.

Multi-modal capabilities also mean BMS can manufacture multiple medicine types at the site, including small molecules, biologics and antibody-drug conjugates, across a range of disease areas. 

It also covers drug product and finished goods manufacturing from late-stage development through to launch. 

BMS expects the campus to expand well beyond its initial configuration in both scale and capability.

“This facility is designed to deliver the speed, quality and reliability that patients depend on, combining flexible, modular manufacturing with advanced digital capabilities to ensure consistent supply across multiple modalities.

"It strengthens our ability to operate with resilience and positions us to reliably deliver medicines to patients today while adapting to future demands.” 

Significant investment in infrastructure

BMS has announced significant investment in its medicine development infrastructure in recent months.

Chief among these was scaling its NVIDIA-powered AI infrastructure to create the “most powerful AI factory in life sciences”.

Despite already possessing one of the industry’s most powerful AI systems, its next-gen system will deliver up to ten times greater performance per megawatt than its predecessor. 

Also set for completion in 2026 is the company’s US$400m Sterile Drug Product facility at Cruiserath Campus in Dublin.

The investment will support manufacturing and supply of existing medicines and create 350 new jobs.
