Merck & Co partners with Google Cloud in a US$1bn AI deal to boost drug discovery, efficiency and patient outcomes through an agentic enterprise platform

Merck & Co, known as MSD outside of the US and Canada, has entered a multi-year partnership with Google Cloud, aiming to transform its operations into an AI-enabled enterprise.

Valued at up to US$1bn, the collaboration is showing how large biopharmaceutical companies can integrate advanced technologies into their core infrastructure.

At the center of this initiative is the deployment of an agentic AI platform powered by tools such as Gemini Enterprise.

The goal is to modernise as well as accelerate innovation, productivity and patient impact across the healthcare ecosystem.

A data driven partnership

The partnership reflects a broader trend in healthcare toward data-driven transformation, where AI plays a central role in improving outcomes and efficiency.

By embedding AI across research and development, Merck aims to streamline drug discovery processes, enabling faster identification of promising compounds and more efficient clinical trial design.

In manufacturing, predictive analytics and intelligent automation can reduce downtime, improve quality control and ensure more resilient supply chains – critical factors in delivering life-saving therapies at scale.

These advancements could ultimately shorten the time it takes for new treatments to reach patients while maintaining rigorous safety standards.

“Merck’s collaboration with Google Cloud represents the next phase of our AI journey, extending our longstanding use of advanced technologies into an intelligent agentic ecosystem that will work alongside our teams as we enter one of the most significant launch periods in our company’s history,” says Dave Williams, Chief Information and Digital Officer, Merck.

“AI agents and generative tools will help our teams around the world reimagine processes at scale and bring scientific breakthroughs to patients faster.”

Enhancing healthcare with AI

Beyond scientific innovation, the collaboration also focuses heavily on operational and patient-facing improvements.

AI-powered personalisation tools will allow Merck to enhance engagement with healthcare providers and patients, tailoring communications and support based on real-world data insights.

Internally, automation across corporate functions is expected to boost productivity for its global workforce of 75,000 employees, freeing up time for higher-value work.

“Our partnership with Merck represents a fundamental shift in how technology supports the entire pharma value chain,” says Thomas Kurian, CEO, Google Cloud

“By deploying an industry-first agentic ecosystem powered by Gemini Enterprise, Merck is not just optimising business processes; it is building a future where the speed of AI and the expertise of human ingenuity come together to bring drugs to patients faster and solve problems that were previously out of reach.”

By combining Merck’s scientific expertise with Google Cloud’s advanced AI capabilities, the partnership represents a significant step toward a more connected, intelligent and responsive healthcare system.

Google Cloud for healthcare

Google Cloud is not just partnering with Merck to create efficient healthcare solutions.

The company already announced its collaboration with CVS Health to “reimagine health care experiences, increase consumer engagement and support better health outcomes.”

CVS Health is launching Health100, a health technology subsidiary to deliver an integrated healthcare engagement platform.

Google Cloud is supporting Health100 by incorporating Gemini models, Cloud Healthcare API and BigQuery.

By combining healthcare interoperability systems, it allows for healthcare systems to directly connect with advanced multimodal AI.

Google Cloud’s Healthcare API also provides a managed solution for storing and accessing healthcare data in Google Cloud Platform.

By using the API, Google Cloud can aid in bridging the gap between care systems and applications.
