The annual Newsweek list of top hospitals worldwide has been published for 2024, and US hospitals dominate, with Mayo Clinic coming out top

Every year, Newsweek releases its list of the world's best hospitals 2024, which it compiles in association with data-gathering specialist, Statista,

The following are the 10 best US hospitals taken from this. These medical institutions, says Newsweek, "share a commitment to achieving excellence regarding patient treatments and results". The US has more hospitals in the list than any other nation.

01: Mayo Clinic

Established in 1889 by the Mayo brothers, the Mayo Clinic it has evolved into a premier medical institution. It is known worldwide for top-quality care and cutting-edge research, and has campuses in Arizona, Florida, and Minnesota. Its clinical specialties include cardiology, oncology, and neurology, and it conducts pioneering research, particularly in genomics and regenerative medicine. It is also a leading training hospital, attracting medical professionals globally.

02: Cleveland Clinic 

The Cleveland Clinic is a leading medical centre, and is famed for its expertise in cardiology, orthopaedics and digestive disorders. Founded in 1921, its research programmes focus on heart disease and neurological disorders. It has over 5 million patient visits annually, and performs an estimated 228,000 surgical procedures, as well as overseeing around 9,500 clinical trials.

03. Massachusetts General Hospital

Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston was established in 1811 and boasts a rich history of medical breakthroughs. Key research programmes include cancer immunotherapy and genetics. Its specialties include oncology, neurology and psychiatry. It performs approximately 48,000 surgeries each year and runs around 2,500 clinical trials annually.

04: Ronald Reagan Medical Center

The UCLA Health Ronald Reagan Medical Center in Los Angeles is a leading medical facility known for its work around cardiology, neurology, and oncology. Established in 1955, its research programmes focus on areas such as stem cell therapy and neuroscience. It is also a prominent training hospital, and runs a round 1,200 clinical trials a year, helping to push the boundaries of medical knowledge. It has 520,000 outpatient visits per annum, and performs 55,000 surgeries annually.

05: Johns Hopkins Hospital

Based in Baltimore, the Johns Hopkins Hospital has a rich history of medical breakthroughs, dating back to 1889. It is known for its excellence in cardiology, neurology and oncology. Notable research programmes focus on areas such as immunotherapy and precision medicine. It conducts numerous clinical trials annually and is also a A premier training hospital. Every year John Hopkins performs around 40,000 surgeries and treats over 2 million patients.

06: Stanford Hospital

Each year, Stanford Hospital in California handles over 2 million outpatient visits and performs around 45,000 surgeries, as well as overseeing 1,000 clinical trials. Its specialties include cardiovascular surgery, neurology, and cancer treatment. Founded in 1959, its major research programmes centre on genomics and precision medicine. As a leading training hospital, it attracts top medical talent from across the globe. 

07: Brigham and Women's Hospital

The second Boston-based hospital in this list, Brigham and Women's Hospital offers high-level treatments in cardiology, women's health and orthopaedics. Established in 1980 through a merger, it also runs numerous research programmes, which focus on areas such as cancer immunotherapy and genetics. In 2023, it handled over 1.5 million patient visits, performed 50,000 surgeries, and oversaw 1,300 clinical trials.

08: Mount Sinai Hospital

The Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City is a renowned medical institution, with specialties including cardiology, oncology, and neurology. Founded in 1852, it boasts a legacy of medical innovation. Key research programmes focus on areas such as genetics and precision medicine. It sees an estimated 3 million patient visits annually, performs around 85,000 surgeries, and oversees approximately 1,500 clinical trials per year.

09: Northwestern Memorial Hospital

Established 42 years ago, Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago specialises in oncology, cardiology and orthopaedics, while its research programmes focus on cancer treatment and neuroscience, areas in which it also runs notable clinical trials. Around 1.5 million patients visit annually, and it performs 50,000 surgeries a year. 

10: University of Michigan Hospital

University of Michigan Hospital in Ann Arbor is best known for its programmes in cancer care, cardiovascular medicine and organ transplantation. Established in 1869, its research programmes focus on regenerative medicine and precision health. It is one of the US’s largest biomedical research communities.
