There are certain exams that can help detect signs of pre-cancer. Treatment choices are better when such signs are found early.

Here are the three medical exams that may save your life.

1. Mammogram

A mammogram is an X-ray image of the breast tissues. It can help your doctor find abnormal changes or signs of cancer.

  • Women 40-49: Ask your doctor when you should have a mammogram.
  • Women 50-75: Get a mammogram every one to two years.

High-risk patients: Patients with family histories of breast cancer. These members need a mammogram every year.

2. Cervical Cancer Screen

  • Women 21-64: Be sure to get a Pap test every three years.
  • Women 30-64: A second test, called the HPV, is encouraged every five years.

High-risk patients: Women with increased or high risk for cervical cancer should be screened yearly.

3. Colorectal Cancer Screening

  • Men & Women 50-75: Get tested yearly at home or ask your doctor about colonoscopy.

High-risk patients: Men and women (age 50 and below) with higher risk for colorectal cancer. Ask your doctor how often you need to be screened.
