After VPS Healthcare recently announced its plans to recruit nearly 5,000 new staff members to increase its new hospitals and medical centers, the Abu Dhabi-based company has also agreed to build a new cancer hospital using the latest proton beam technology.

The new cancer center is part of a new medical site planned for Mohammed Bin Zayed City in Abu Dhabi. In addition, VPS will begin a new partnership with U.S.-based University of Pennsylvania Health System based around improving standards in patient care as well as educational opportunities.

The deal with Penn Medicine will provide knowledge on creating new systems, while contributing physicians and nurses to train VPS Healthcare’s staff. It will also assist VPS in developing its own oncology, along with creating a format for its nursing staff to earn accreditation under the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Magnet program.

“Oncology is one space where we were very interested to collaborate,” said VPS Healthcare founder and managing director, Dr. Shamsheer Vayalil. “They have already started looking at our systems and trying to make sure we provide the entire service spectrum in our new project in Mohammed Bin Zayed City. That’s going to be our flagship hospital and we expect to have the latest technology in Cancer, including a proton beam, which is only available in a few centers around the world.”

VPS Healthcare is a group of 14 hospitals in the Middle East, Europe, UK and India, and employs about 7,500 people. Although the company intends to recruit new talent from across the globe, VPS plans on focusing on developing local talent.

Earlier this year, the company became one of nine that promised to train 1,000 young Arabs as part of a World Economic Forum Initiative aimed at creating an increased number of youth employment opportunities in the Middle East.

In addition, VPS took part in last weekend’s three-day Arab Health Recruitment and Training Fair at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Center, while it is also getting set to take part in the Acute and General Medicine Conference next month in London.
