Vantive has published its 2025 Sustainability Report, marking its first report since becoming an independent company after separating from Baxter in 2025

Vantive, formerly Baxter’s Kidney Care segment until February 2025, when it was taken private by investment firm Carlyle, has published its inaugural sustainability report since becoming an independent company.

Today, Vantive continues its more than 70 years of work in the kidney health space, aiming to improve patients' dialysis experience through digital solutions and advanced services while also developing organ support therapies.

Its 2025 Sustainability Report documents the environmental and social progress the company made across its operations throughout the year.

Highlights featured in the report include US$290 million invested in R&D, approximately 1 million pounds of medical equipment collected and redeployed annually, and 41 energy management projects across Vantive facilities that delivered 17.1 gigawatt-hours in thermal savings.

In the report’s introduction, Chris Toth, CEO of Vantive, writes: “At Vantive, sustainability is integral to how we extend lives and expand possibilities for patients around the world. It informs the way we support employees, patients, and care teams – and how we operate our business – helping shape access to high-quality care and the long-term health of the communities we serve."

Chris continues: “In 2025, we advanced key areas of our sustainability agenda. We made progress toward our goals for energy use and greenhouse gas emissions, while continuing to expand access to care globally.”

Contributing to scientific and care communities

The social commitments documented in Vantive’s Sustainability Report are wide-ranging, covering everything from strategic partnerships with clinical institutions and improving care access outcomes to health policy advocacy and employee health and safety.

One notable example of these commitments from 2025 is Vantive’s investment in evidence generation for home dialysis and vital organ therapies, running eight clinical studies alongside investigator-initiated research, including 30 chronic dialysis and 41 vital organ therapy studies – work which ultimately produced 35 peer-reviewed publications and 32 congress abstracts.

Echoing this, Matthew Gillis, Vantive’s Head of Corporate Sustainability, highlights that the sustainability performance of healthcare organisations goes beyond just environmental considerations.

Writing in the report, he says, “We recognise that sustainability extends beyond environmental performance alone. It includes the ways we support access to care, invest in our people, operate with integrity, manage resources responsibly and contribute positively to the communities where we live and work.

“Through these efforts, we seek to create lasting value while supporting our mission to extend lives and expand possibilities.”

Emissions baseline established

As part of formalising Vantive’s sustainability processes as a newly independent company, an initial baseline accounting of energy and GHG emissions was established in early 2026, while company-wide emissions reduction targets will also soon be formally set.

Vantive’s manufacturing facilities continue to track their performance against the targets that were in place before Vantive became an independent company. Namely, to achieve carbon neutrality across direct operations by 2040 and to reduce absolute Scope 1 and Scope 2 market-based emissions by 25% by 2030, compared to a 2020 baseline.

The report notes that a 27% reduction in manufacturing facility Scope 1 and 2 emissions has been achieved compared to the baseline.

Additionally, nine of the company's 17 manufacturing facilities matched 100% of their electricity needs with renewable energy in 2025, while five facilities met a portion of their needs through on-site solar energy systems.

Other environmental considerations

The report also examines a range of other environmental factors, including water, waste and material usage.

Vantive actively pursues water conservation and efficiency projects, aiming to drive resource use efficiency.

Notable 2025 initiatives include the recovery and reuse of 85,609 cubic metres of water from sterilisation autoclaves at operations in Mexico, and the introduction of a new process in Castlebar, Ireland, to recover and reuse hot water previously discharged during mix tank cleaning – saving 13,600 cubic metres of water and 1.68 million kilowatt-hours of energy annually.

At its facilities in Mexico, Vantive recycled 93% of nonhazardous waste in 2025. It also redeploys more than 35,000 peritoneal dialysis cyclers per year, equivalent to approximately 1 million pounds in weight of electromechanical equipment.
