Danaher CEO Julie Sawyer Montgomery described the planned AI lab as “an important milestone” towards expediting “the journey from discovery to impact”

Pharmaceutical research labs are increasingly blurring the line between the physical and virtual worlds. The traditional image of scientists in white coats working at laboratory benches is giving way to increasingly connected, automated research environments straddling the physical and virtual realms.

Developing these hybrid labs is now emerging as a key priority among some of the pharmaceutical sector’s biggest players.

Combining AI, robotics and laboratory automation, these closed-loop systems can independently plan, execute and analyse experiments with minimal human intervention, creating a continuous cycle between digital design and physical experimentation.

Danaher offers the latest example of this trend, as the firm announced plans to launch its “first AI-powered autonomous lab.”

Expected to become operational in early 2027, the lab will fuse AI, robotics and various Danaher technologies into a single workflow to help researchers rapidly develop custom antibodies and molecular tools.

Danaher CEO Julie Sawyer Montgomery says the lab will help “researchers move from an idea to tested and validated affinity reagents up to 8x faster while maintaining scientific rigour.

“This is the full power of Danaher in action, bringing together our science, technology and culture of continuous improvement to accelerate the journey from discovery to impact.”

Key facts: Danaher's autonomous AI lab
  • 1 autonomous lab – New AI-powered facility based at Abcam's HQ in Cambridge, UK.
  • 5 Danaher companies – Beckman Coulter Life Sciences, Cytiva, Genedata, IDT and Molecular Devices will contribute technologies.
  • AI-powered – The lab will design and test affinity reagents, including antibodies, in a continuous learning loop.
  • Design-make-test-learn – Experimental results are fed back into AI models to inform subsequent designs.
  • 1 connected workflow – From reagent design and synthesis through testing and analysis.

Unifying Danaher’s technological capabilities

Based at Danaher company Abcam, the lab will use AI to design affinity reagents, including antibodies, before automatically building and testing each candidate.

The results are then fed back into the AI model, allowing it to refine subsequent designs and create a continuous design-make-test-learn cycle.

The lab connects technologies from across Danaher’s portfolio, bringing together capabilities from Beckman Coulter Life Sciences, Cytiva, Genedata, Integrated DNA Technologies and Molecular Devices within a single workflow. Robotic automation and device orchestration, meanwhile, have been developed in collaboration with Automata.

By continuously feeding experimental data back into the design process, the lab aims to compress research cycles while maintaining the rigour of repeated testing and validation.

Luciano Lucas, Vice President and Enterprise Head of Autonomous and Intelligent Labs at Danaher, believes the proposed lab will redefine the future of scientific discovery.

On LinkedIn, he writes: “We are…building a broader foundation for the future of science: a new generation of intelligent scientific devices designed to generate AI-ready data, integrate seamlessly into customer-defined workflows, be easily controlled programmatically…incorporate expert-level agentic capabilities, simplify operation, improve data quality and help researchers gain deeper insights.

“These capabilities can benefit scientists whether they work in manual, semi-automated, or fully autonomous environments.”

Autonomous labs on the rise

Danaher’s announcement comes as pharmaceutical and biotech companies increasingly explore how AI, automation and advanced data infrastructure could reshape the laboratory itself.

Roche has said it is developing autonomous, AI-driven laboratories to accelerate R&D and drug discovery, alongside a wider push towards “AI independence” across its research operations.

The company is targeting up to 20 new molecular entities by 2030, highlighting its growing ambition to connect computational intelligence with physical experimentation.

The shift is also visible among AI-native drug discovery companies. Recursion Pharmaceuticals, for example, operates automated laboratories as part of Recursion OS, connecting physical experimentation with machine learning in a continuous feedback loop.

Its platform can run up to two million experiments a week, with experimental data feeding back into its models to inform subsequent discovery.

Meanwhile, Isomorphic Labs has developed an AI-first approach to drug discovery, using AI models and large-scale computational experiments alongside expertise spanning machine learning, chemistry and biology.

Insilico Medicine has taken a similarly integrated approach, connecting its AI drug discovery platform with an automated laboratory capable of carrying out experiments and feeding the resulting data back into its models.
