Two major Italian hospitals have installed indoor 5G Distributed Antenna System (DAS) infrastructure that could support advances in digital healthcare services for patients and medical staff.
Policlinico Tor Vergata in Rome and San Carlo Borromeo Hospital in Milan now have DAS networks deployed by Boldyn Networks, a neutral-host provider.
The installations create a dedicated indoor connectivity platform capable of supporting advanced digital healthcare services without depending on the strength of outdoor mobile signals.

The 5G infrastructure could enable hospitals to deploy applications that require high data rates and reliable connections.

Neutral-host infrastructure benefits
The DAS systems use a neutral-host infrastructure model that allows multiple mobile network operators to share the same physical network, removing the need for each operator to install separate equipment within hospital buildings.
Hospitals face challenges with mobile connectivity because they cannot control which networks patients and visitors use.
Staff, for example, may use devices on one mobile network while patients and visitors use different providers.
Dedicated indoor infrastructure means connectivity falls within the building operator's control rather than depending entirely on external mobile networks, which is important for business-critical or life-critical applications that hospitals may deploy.
Many 5G deployments use mid-band spectrum around 3.5 GHz, which does not penetrate building materials as effectively as the lower-frequency spectrum traditionally used for wide-area mobile coverage. Indoor antenna systems help overcome this limitation by bringing the radio signal inside the building.
Medical facilities adoption patterns
Boldyn Networks has deployed the infrastructure as part of its expansion as a foreign investor in Italian telecoms infrastructure.
The company has installed connectivity solutions across multiple facility types including airports, sports venues and universities, as well as for Rome's 2025 Jubilee celebrations.
