The World Health Organisation (WHO) has launched a new global nutrition initiative which could save millions of lives around the world.

The e-Library of Evidence for Nutrition Actions (eLENA) is a web-based tool that will give advice and guidance to governments to support them in the fight against malnutrition.

One of the major challenges governments face in tackling malnutrition is the vast amount of conflicting and contradictory evidence and advice that is available on the subject.

eLENA therefore prioritises the most up-to-date advice and presents it to governments on the three main topics of malnutrition; under nutrition, vitamin and mineral deficiencies and overweight and obesity.

The WHO is a key player in the ‘Scaling Up Nutrition’ movement and the eLENA tool is a key part of the WHO’s global efforts to  help countries prevent, control and manage malnutrition.

Dr Ala Alwan, WHO Assistant Director-General of Noncommunicable Diseases and Mental Health, said of the launch: “Several billion people are affected by one or more types of malnutrition.

“Countries need access to the science and evidence-informed guidance to reduce the needless death and suffering associated with malnutrition.

He added: malnutrition.”
