FluidAI & Medtronic work on remote patient monitors

Hospital discharges free up beds for new patients
FluidAI & Medtronic have joined forces to advance healthcare technology, by caring for discharged hospital patients at home with an AI-driven project

AI startup FluidAI has entered into a strategic partnership with Medtronic Canada ULC, a subsidiary of Medtronic, to advance DIGITAL's Continuous Connected Patient Care Project.

AI health tech to support discharged patients

Medtronic is a global healthcare technology leader based in Minneapolis. FluidAI was founded in 2014 and is best known as the developer of the Stream™ Platform, which is used in post-surgical patient monitoring. With over 90,000 employees worldwide and 49,000 patents in their portfolio, Medtronic develops precision engineering, surgical instruments, pacemakers and diabetes pumps.

The two businesses aim to transform Canadian healthcare with the Continuous Connected Patient Care project, under the Global Innovation Cluster rollout for Canadian digital technologies, known as DIGITAL.

Hospital patients with serious complications remain in hospital longer than they need to once they have stabilised, which exhausts healthcare professionals’ time and prevents potentially more seriously ill patients from having a hospital bed. The CCPC project ensures patients are cared for at home once they have been discharged, using predictive analytics, AI and home monitoring technology which can integrate with medical systems at the hospital.

Medtronic’s health tech developments

George Murgatroyd leads the Digital Surgery team at Medtronic, a part of the Surgical Robotics operating unit. He previously spoke with Healthcare Digital to discuss healthcare technology transformations.

“In many hospitals, the technology found in the operating room does not incorporate the same level of innovation that we see reflected in our day-to-day lives with Google and Amazon assistants,” said Murgatroyd. “There's a significant opportunity for digital solutions to address these challenges. I think that's clear, and I think they spread across all levels of surgical experience."

As for now, Medtronic and FluidAi look forward to advancing this exciting collaboration.

"As healthcare delivery and patient needs change, it is important that we continue to evolve how we and our partners provide tools and support for our clinicians,” said Rick Sethi, R&D Director, Open Innovation and R&T at Medtronic. “Collaboration is key to develop new patient-centric solutions and augment our clinicians with personalised care for their patients."
